Mexican Marimba-Punk band Son Rompe Pera have announced their new album, Marimbazos De Oro (Golden Marimba Hits), due out September 18, 2026, via Mixto Records. Produced by Grammy-nominated musician Adrian Quesada of the Black Pumas, the record offers a glimpse into what has shaped the band before the world discovered them.
Along with the album news, they have shared their new single “Nada Que Hacer” (“Nothing to Do”), a “tribute to the band’s teenage rebellion.”
Following a run of shows in Europe and Japan, Son Rompe Pera is bringing their Reptilio Tour to the U.S. later this summer with stops in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Chicago and more.
The band says:
“‘Nada Que Hacer’ habla de esa sensación que casi todo adolescente conoce. Crees que la vida es aburrida porque no tienes nada que hacer, pero después te das cuenta de que esos eran probablemente los días más fáciles de tu vida. En ese entonces nuestra única meta era divertirnos con los amigos. Hoy no paramos de trabajar. Visto en retrospectiva, esos momentos se convirtieron en algunos de nuestros mejores recuerdos.
‘Nada Que Hacer’ is about that feeling almost every teenager experiences. You think life is boring because you have nothing to do, but later you realize those were probably the easiest days of your life. Back then our only goal was to have fun with our friends. Today, we never stop working. Looking back, those moments became some of our best memories.”
In 2002, the Gama brothers were introduced to the Marimba by their father, a percussionist in a local band, who taught them to play all the Cumbia classics. They spent their childhood accompanying him at neighborhood parties, sometimes performing for over five hours. In their teens, they were pulled toward Mexico City’s underground Punk scene.
In Mexico City’s late-2000s punk scene, admitting you played marimba wasn’t exactly a badge of honor. Instead, the Gama brothers embraced the Psychobilly era, wore mohawks, knockoff Dr. Martens and Creepers boots. They formed a punk band called The Stomping Rats, where the eldest brother, Mongo, traded the marimba for guitar. Ironically, the same teenage rebellion that led the brothers to hide the marimba from their friends would ultimately become their signature sound.
After their father passed in 2016, the Gama brothers (Kacho, Mongo, and Kilos) decided to honor his legacy by forming a new band based around the Marimba, accompanied by friends Raúl Albarran (bass) and Ricardo López (drums). Son Rompe Pera, keeping their father’s original name for the family project, has taken their blend of Mexican folkloric roots and Punk sensibilities to a global audience.
Marimbazos de Oro is both a fresh start for Son Rompe Pera’s long-time followers and an introduction for new fans. The album expands their sound beyond Cumbia-Punk, telling the band’s story through their favorite musical genres.
