To celebrate the launch of her first tour in the US and Canada, Parisian singer/songwriter Gabi Hartmann has released an expanded version of her second album, La femme aux yeux de sel (Le long voyage), including 8 new tracks.
The album is structured as a three-part tale that “tells the story of a woman named Salinda, who lives on a dream island and whose salt eyes melt with every tear she sheds. To heal her eyes, she sets off on a journey in search of the secrets of salt.”
La femme aux yeux de sel “follows the journey of a woman as she transitions from innocence (Chapter 1) to serenity (Chapter 3), navigating life’s disillusionments along the way (Chapter 2).”
Through the songs, Gabi tells the story of her “emotions, joy from her travels, struggles with vulnerability, the melancholy that lingers, anger at a troubled world, suffering, anxiety, and ultimately, the wonder of nature’s healing embrace.”
Drawing inspiration from female artists, the character of Salinda is influenced by La Rumba des Îles from Marguerite Duras’ film India Song (co-composed and arranged with Oan Kim). The album pays tribute to Latin American music, particularly the voices of Mercedes Sosa and South African singer Miriam Makeba, a longtime inspiration for Gabi.
This album is also the result of collaborations, both longstanding (Oan Kim and Jesse Harris) and new. Syrian flutist Naïssam Jalal features on “Le Lever de Soleil”, a track that questions the state of the world. This song, along with “Love High” and “Ton Monde Secret”, was co-written and produced with saxophonist and composer Laurent Bardainne (Camélia Jordana, Jeanne Added, and November Ultra).
The album also includes Julia Johansen of The Oracle Sisters, who lends her voice to “Drink The Ocean,” co-composed with Oan Kim. Additionally, “Mélancolie”, composed with Baptiste Trotignon, features the string arrangements of Brazilian composer Maycon Ananias.
