After announcing their debut album earlier this summer Oklahoma City Experimental group Brainwasher have released their album, 39 Lightyears from Heaven via Mothland. Over ten years in the making, the album pulls influence from David Lynch’s surrealist universe, Nick Cave, and Portishead.
Along with the release of their debut full-length album, the band have shared the single “Home,” a power ballad written while they were on tour with The Flaming Lips that “muses about finding a home in unexpected places.” The song has a romantic outlook and pays a certain amount of “homage to their days on the road.”
The band is the brainchild of Matthew Duckworth Kirksey (vocals, drums, keyboards, sampler) and Tommy McKenzie (guitar, bass, keyboards, sampler), known for their work with acts like The Flaming Lips, Miley Cyrus, Brothers Griiin, Beachy Head, and Net. As Brainwasher, the duo work with a blend of Trip-Hop, Industrial, Shoegaze, and New Wave.
On the inspiration behind “Home,” Kirksey shares:
We wrote ‘Home’ while in Savannah, Georgia. A friend of ours was telling us this story about sneaking into her small town football stadium to run through the sprinklers, being really high on acid, and getting busted by the cops. We were exploring ideas of what it means to be at home, and what it’s like to feel a deep connection to a place that isn’t your home.

The accompanying video, directed by longtime Flaming Lips collaborator Blake Studdard, was shot across various states while on tour in an intimate, DIY style. It was filmed on location in California, Washington, Oregon, Montana, and Utah by Brainwasher and Studdard, echoing the spirit in which the song was written.
