The Earls Of Babylon Take On Chronic Complainers With “Piece Of My Mind”

The Earls Of Babylon is an ongoing project from Rock veterans Steve Conte and Brian Ray, and they have returned with new single, “Piece Of My Mind”. There’s also a limited edition seven-inch vinyl available.

The origin of the song began when Conte sent Ray a Blues riff and melody. Ray then added the chorus and title, whereas Conte shaped the verses. Within days, the two had a finished track.

Conte says:

The whole thing came together fast and fun. Lots of laughs, lots of energy.

The song was recorded at Stevie Van Zandt’s New York City studio, and features the following:

  • Brian Ray – guitar, backing vocals
  • Steve Conte – guitar, lead vocals
  • Charley Drayton (Keith Richards, The Rolling Stones) – drums
  • John Conte (Asbury Jukes) – bass
  • Backing vocals: Steve, Brian & Kevin Tyler Preston (Prima Donna, Green Day)

They cut the track live and the first take actually became the final master. Lyrically, “Piece Of My Mind” takes on “chronic complainers and finger-pointers—a reminder to step back, gain perspective, and recognize that plenty of people have it tougher.”

Brian Ray has spent decades in music, at first with Etta James (as her longtime musical director), and since 2002 as guitarist and bassist for Paul McCartney’s band. He also co-leads The Bayonets and has a string of solo records to his name.

Steve Conte’s career spans solo albums and stints with The New York Dolls, Michael Monroe, and countless others.
