Bask Pays Tribute To Kindred Spirits The Brian Jonestown Massacre With An Appalachian Cover Of “Anemone”

After a tour with their labelmates and fellow North Carolinians Weedeater, Asheville natives Bask will be releasing their fourth album later this year. But first, the band are looking back at one of their influences, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, through covering their track “Anemone.”

Guitarist and vocalist Zeb Wright says:

We’ve always been inspired by acts like The Brian Jonestown Massacre. They write songs that feel outside of time and place.

The release also celebrates the 20th anniversary of the documentary about The Brian Jonestown Massacre that brought them into greater public view.

Bask feels that they and The Brian Jonestown Massacre have been in a similar headspace heading into their fourth albums. While partially named after the Rolling Stones’ guitarist, BJM shifted from Shoegaze to ’60s Psychedelia on 1996’s Their Satanic Majesties’ Second Request. Bask’s upcoming album also ventures that way, though their cover of that album’s “Anemone” is taken from the band’s Appalachian roots.

This cover is also the first release since Jed Willis joined as the band’s official fifth member, lifting their take on Cosmic Country.

Bask says of “Anemone”:

‘Anemone’ is hypnotic in its repetition and perfectly expresses the combination of emotional distress and unbothered cool that to us feels so integral to BJM’s sound and songwriting. It’s also really fun to play and riff on.
