Them Coulee Boys Say It May Be ‘No Fun In The Chrysalis’ Of Life, But We Evolve to Move On

Leading up to the release of their new album, No Fun In The Chrysalis, out now on Some Fun Records, Them Coulee Boys have shared a new video for their Americana radio single, “Up Close“.

TBC’s frontman Soren Staff shares the inspiration behind the single:

Put simply, it’s a song about making out. Piano, mandolin, banjo, and bass all descend on the jam, building to a crescendo, signifying the intimacy of physical attraction that builds — finally — to acting on that impulse. In the end, we want the listener to have fun.

No Fun In The Chrysalis finds the Wisconsin artists reunited with Grammy-winner Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Kathleen Edwards, Sufjan Stevens) at The Hive Studios in their hometown of Eau Claire. The album art features photography by Nate Vrieze, as well as liner notes from best-selling author Nickolas Butler (Shotgun Lovesongs). The LP will be opaque red vinyl and feature a gatefold sleeve.

Lyrically, the songs “deal with the uncertainty of romantic relationships — those points in a relationship or in life in general where you fully realize the situation you are in and either accept it or not; and ultimately, move on.” While it’s certainly “no fun in the chrysalis,” it’s something we all need to live through to evolve.

The album has a loose, upbeat feel where you can hear the band members switching from their main instrument to piano, or stepping into the mics for their four-part harmonies.
