Hackensaw Boys Reflect On How Christmas Magic Transforms In Adulthood With “The Child I Once Was”

As they approach the holiday season, Roots band Hackensaw Boys have released new Christmas single, “The Child I Once Was“, out now alongside a video. The song reflects on “the bittersweet passage of time, weaving together the magic of childhood wonder with the lost innocence and pervasive pessimism of adulthood.” However, the group also concludes “that Christmas magic never truly disappears; it just transforms.”

Hackensaw Boys frontman and songwriter of the new single, David Sickman says:

On December 31, 2020 I was ready for Christmas to be over. I was taking down the Christmas tree when my little daughter, who I believe was around 5 years old, asked me what I was doing. A melody came to my mind and I started joking with her singing the words that came to my mind in that moment. This melody, and the words, ended up being the opening line to what is now ‘The Child I Once Was.’

Hackensaw Boys are currently gearing up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their album, Love What You Do, which was released in August 2005 on Nettwerk Records. Compiled from sessions that took place in Charlottesville, San Francisco, and Amsterdam amid constant touring, so many of its cuts remain fan favorites to this day.

They also have remaining tour dates in December, and some 2025 dates on the schedule.
