Indie Rock band Nico Vega has announced their upcoming EP Make It Out Alive, led by the new song “I’ve Got My Soul.” The single arrives with an official music video where lead singer Aja Volkman “fights off groping arms and faceless attackers.” The message is about remaining “unbroken in the face of traumatic experiences.” The new EP will arrive in January 2025.
Volkman says of the video:
This video is about so many things. Hopefully something different and somewhat identifiable for each person. For me this video is about battling the shadows of life. All of the things that have happened that have played a role in creating my own behavior patterns. It’s those things you battle throughout life that you can trace back to a single event or many events. They create a ripple effect. They create our shadow. Because hurt people hurt people. But no matter what happens in this life, nothing can steal your soul.
We wrote the song after the war broke out in Israel last year. I had a hard time understanding how to reconcile the atrocities that were taking place. And this isn’t about pointing a finger or picking sides. In the end of the day, the only thing we have is an eternal soul and it can’t be stolen or even manipulated. I’m pro-eternal light.
Of Make It Out Alive, the band shares:
Nico Vega is one of the true loves of our lives and bringing this band back has been a journey of communication, nurturing, healing, and acceptance. When we started writing again, we had a lot to say, but weren’t quite sure who Nico Vega was gonna be after a 10 year break. In the process of writing and discovery, we equal parts handled individual pain and loss, but we also healed some of things within the core of Nico Vega that kept us apart for all those years. We are all a little more whole as a unit and we hope you feel the same catharsis while listening to these songs that we felt while writing them!!! The title is “Make It Out Alive” because we are never really sure if we quite “made” it…. We remind ourselves to thrive in and enjoy the journey. Thank you for being part of our journey!!

The track is also one of the first since original band member Michael Peña returned to the fold alongside singer Aja Volkman, guitarist Rich Koehler, and drummer Dan Epand. Peña, whose mother the band is named after, was the original drummer, but left early in the band’s history due to the demands of an acting career which would see him get roles in movies such as End Of Watch, Narcos: Mexico, Crash, and Ant-Man. Peña current plays bass with the band, his original instrument.
