Emmy award-winning director and cinematographer Matt Bass has just released his new feature documentary film, SK8FACE | The Evolution of Skateboard Art. Winner of Best Documentary at Los Angeles’ Independent Filmmakers Showcase Film Festival in 2023, the film dives into the untold history and evolution of skateboard art and culture. 

Featuring exclusive interviews with skate heroes Tony Hawk, Neil Blender, Tony Alva, Mark Gonzales, Vernon Courtlandt Johnson (VCJ), and so many others, viewers can see through the eyes of artists and skateboarders, drawn from their firsthand experiences and stories of the art.

The film is described thus:

SK8FACE invites audiences to learn about and appreciate the history of skateboard art, realize its connection and influence on the modern art world, and also illustrate today’s independent creators and cultural influencers.

The film is actually a 70 year journey, beginning in the 1950s when boards were simple planks of wood, and culminating today when skateboards are considered major works of art.

The SK8FACE story was also recently featured in The Smithsonian’s new book about skateboarding, Four Wheels and a Board: The Smithsonian History of Skateboarding, a look at the “creative, controversial, and vibrant history of skateboarding.”

SK8FACE | The Evolution of Skateboard Art is distributed by Multicom Entertainment Group and is streaming now on Amazon Prime,Tubi, and Roku.

Next month on September 25, 2024 in Venice, CA, Juice Magazine will be hosting a screening of SK8FACE | The Evolution of Skateboard Art. The special event will include appearances and Q&As with special guest artists, an art show, and more.
