Jack Barksdale’s “Freakshow” Turns The Tables On Ostracizing Others

Jack Barksdale will be releasing the EP Out of Order on September 13th, 2024, and new single “Freakshow” is out now alongside a video. The song takes an interesting approach to difference and judging others, all set in an eerie atmosphere.

Barksdale comments on the single:

It’s strange, becoming aware of your brain growing up. You start being more conscious of being in the moment. I co-wrote ‘Freak Show’ with Alabama singer-songwriter Matt Prater. We have a mutual friend and fellow songwriter, Abe Partridge, who uses chaos and dissonance as scene-setting and storytelling tools to take the audience to a new realm with him. Matt and I both picked up on the power of this technique and wanted to try it out. That was where we started.

Barksdale adds:

We ended up making it about this guy who goes to the circus to make fun of the ‘freaks,’ but he’s the one everyone is pointing and laughing at — which I thought was a pretty good message!

For the single, Barksdale chose to work again with Producer Mark Edgar Stuart.

Barksdale, who is 17 years old, released his latest album in 2022, Death of a Hummingbird. Out of Order marks Barksdale’s first collection of new songs since Phantom Trails, an all-instrumental collaboration with Mike Meadows released last November, and singles like this summer’s “How’s It Gonna End”/“Yesterday’s Here”, a pair of Tom Waits covers recorded in Austin with Canadian artist Lindi Ortega, also produced by Meadows.
