Roots Rock duo Goodnight, Texas’ new studio album, Signals, arrives today, on July 19th, and to celebrate, they’ve released another track from the LP with an accompanying music video, “Among Tumbleweeds.”

Singer-songwriter Avi Vinocur has this to say of the track:

“This is a song ultimately about preservation and my feeling that the planet is not ours to destroy.

The song takes place inside an Ansel Adams photograph shot on November 1st of 1941 – his famous “Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico” – and features my imagining the stories behind the town and its cross tombstones seen lit by the fading sun. To me, the juxtaposition of a tombstone representing a person’s brief life, beneath an adobe tower representing a town’s only slightly longer incorporation, upon a 50 million year old beautiful high desert valley, beneath a 4 billion year old moonrise and sunset contextualizes our microscopic lifespan within the life of our planet itself.

Living in California in 2024, it is apparent all around us that the climate and weather are changing. Fires are erupting seasonally, wind and storms are more intense. Flooding and drought are more extreme than ever recorded. The indigenous people upon whose land we now live were incredible stewards, leaving every successive generation with something beautiful to share. Despite safeguarding much of the planet’s remaining biodiversity of flora and fauna with millennia of knowledge, indigenous leaders are seldom included in conservation plans.

In favor of capitalism and inconsequential shareholder profits, corporations and the extremely wealthy are poisoning the air and water literally and by funding elections of lawmakers who are consistently rolling back regulations – as if the planet’s health is ours to sell. We are in danger of not leaving, or perhaps we are already beyond leaving, a habitable planet for those coming next.”
