The Demo Won Out For Kim Richey’s “Floating On The Surface”

Singer/songwriter Kim Richey has revealed the song “Floating On The Surface”, the first single to be released from Richey’s upcoming LP, Every New Beginning, due out on May 24th, 2024 on Yep Roc Records. Featuring ten songs on Richey’s 10th studio album, some songs are co-written with fellow songwriters Aaron Lee Tasjan and Brian Wright.

“Floating On The Surface” was written and demoed with Roger Alan Nichols, but never went past that initial phase, actually.

Richey recalls:

This song is different from all the other songs on the album in that we decided to use the demo. Roger Nichols and I wrote this around a cool guitar line that Roger came up with. He engineered and played everything and I sang all the parts and played percussion.

We tried re-recording it with the band while tracking songs for this record. We tried replacing the fake drums with real drums. We messed around with the vocals. Finally, producer Doug Lancio decided we weren’t going to beat the demo. Sometimes a demo has some sort of magic sauce that you just can’t recreate.

Fans who pre-order the new album on vinyl have the option of Clear Coke Bottle Vinyl or a Limited Edition (250 worldwide pressing) Translucent Orange Vinyl that includes an autographed handwritten note from Richey.

Richey hits the road again in March for West Coast and Midwest shows before heading across the Atlantic in May. Tour dates can be found below or at kimrichey.com/tour
