Darko’s “What I Cannot Be” Pushes Back Against Traditional Ideas Of Masculinity

UK Punk outfit Darko have unveiled new single and video, “What I Cannot Be,” combining their traditional speed with an even more passionate approach driven by the song’s topic. “What I Cannot Be” kicks off the upcoming five track collection Greyscale. Producer Will Duff of Goliath Studios returns for this second chapter of a trilogy preceded by 2022’s Sparkle.

Frontman Tom West explains about the new song:

Melodic skate punk will always be in the DNA of Darko, but sometimes it just isn’t angry enough for the subject matter.

Across the new single, West condemns “neanderthal hardmen” and “traditional expectations of masculinity”

He explains:

Having focused on how the patriarchy principally harms women and marginalised genders in Sparkle’s opener “The Ladder”, this time around I needed to vent about the significant toll it also takes on men and boys. Being pushed into boxes based on redundant stereotypes hurts everyone.
