Started in 1983 by Dayton, Ohio elementary school teacher Robert Pollard, Guided By Voices is celebrating their 40th anniversary this year. To celebrate their 40th year, the band is hosting a 2-night celebration at Dayton Masonic Center (Dayton, OH), taking place Friday September 1 and Saturday September 2nd, 2023. Between the two nights, Dinosaur Jr, Built To Spill, Heartless Bastards, Wednesday, and Kiwi Jr will also perform.

In addition to these forthcoming shows, GBV’s 39th album and second of 2023, Welshpool Frillies, hits stores on July 21, 2023 with another album scheduled for November. You might deduce from all these releases that Robert Pollard has a very strong work ethic. With most of their touring canceled due to the pandemic and then a fractured kneecap, Guided By Voices spent a lot of time in the studio, recording and releasing eight albums in the past three years.

Welshpool Frillies finds the gang back together, in a Brooklyn basement with Producer Travis Harrison. Much of it was recorded live to tape. The album is no-frills and inspired by the “wiliness” of 90s-era GBV, specifically the Scalping the Guru compilation that Pollard put together in 2022.
