Altın Gün Brings Psych-Folk To Ancient Turkish Traditions For ‘Aşk’

Grammy Award-nominated Turkish Psych-Folk outfit Altın Gün have shared their new single, “Güzelliğin On Para Etmez.” Written and composed by the Turkish poet Âşık Veysel, the single heralds the arrival of the band’s new album, Aşk, arriving via ATO Records on Friday, March 10, 2023.

Âşık Veysel was a singer, poet, songwriter, and bağlama virtuoso, a prominent representative of the Anatolian ashik tradition. Blind for most of his lifetime, Veysel’s often sad songs embrace a wide range of themes, from “the inevitability of death and constant questioning of issues such as love, care, and belief, to how he perceived the world as a blind man.”

Now, the Amsterdam-based band Altın Gun has recast Veysel’s poem with Psych-Rock and Folk elements. The sound on the track returns to the band’s first two albums for inspiration, moving away from the more Electronic and synth-driven aspects of their 2021 releases. This was also an effort to capture their live sound.

Recorded using vintage equipment and techniques, the new album’s tracks represent a new reading of traditional Turkish Folk tunes, showing how ancient songs remain eternally resonant.
