North Carolina artist Kirby Heard is releasing her second full-length album, Ripples in the Wake, on October 14th, 2022 and building on her traditional feel by bringing in themes of self-reflection and political introspection. Heard has been working on the album for the past 3 years.
The songs span many eras and styles for Heard. She remarks that “(That’s What Makes) A Bluegrass Song” on the album was great fun to write and, at times, almost “a music theory lesson” whereas “Grab the Lightning” is a tribute to horses she rode in her late teens, especially a retired barrel racer named Rocker.

These new songs, like her previous collection, “recall down-home grass-roots stories that this generation needs to hear and our generation needs to remember”, according to the artist.
