Ethel Cain has released new single, “American Teenager,” the final single from her album Preacher’s Daughter, out May 12th. The new track follows singles “Gibson Girl” and “Strangers,” and serves as the starting point for the story of the girl from Shady Grove featured on the album. Cain has also announced the Freezer Bride Tour, with live dates starting in July on the East Coast.
Cain comments on “American Teenager”:
Growing up I was surrounded by visions of Nascar, rock’n’roll, and being the one who would change everything. They make you think it’s all achievable and that if nothing else, you should at least die trying. What they don’t tell you is that you need your neighbor more than your country needs you. I wrote this song as an expression of my frustration with all the things the ‘American Teenager’ is supposed to be but never had any real chance of becoming.

Preacher’s Daughter tells the drama of an American family who “refuses to learn from history and is therefore doomed to repeat it”. Following the prodigal daughter who will never return home, Preacher’s Daughter captures “Cain’s pilgrimage across a broken all-American backdrop as she grapples with each female archetype forced upon her, along with the realization that violence truly only begets violence”.
Cain collaborated on Preacher’s Daughter with a number of multi-instrumentalists including Matthew Tomasi & Colyer, with Cain serving as producer and writer “across every facet of the creation process” for each song.
