Sam Himself’s ‘Moonsongs’ Embraces The Minimal And Atmospheric

Swiss-American Alt/Indie Rock artist Sam Himself has just released his new album, Moonsongs, marking his third full-length release. Recorded with longtime producer Daniel Schlett (Iggy Pop, The War on Drugs) and mastered by Greg Calbi (Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie), Moonsongs strips Sam’s music down to the emotional core while turning minimalism into atmosphere.

Moonsongs is a collection of tracks that explore “homecomings, departures, and the quiet spaces in between.” The result “reflects the life changes of all kinds and sizes” that resulted in “a period of significant personal transformation”.

Sam Himself says:

“I took my time writing and recording Moonsongs. When it was done, I was in a very different place, lifewise, from where I’d started. Making this record taught me a lot about letting stuff happen. All of the songs are, to some extent, about things – people, events – outside my control; writing them only made sense once I stopped trying to control the process so much.

My producer, Daniel (Schlett), played a key role in all of this. Part of what makes him a creative genius, in my mind, is his intuition for when to insist and when to let go, where to build and where to leave space. Recording at Outlier (Inn Studios, Mountain Dale, NY) in the middle of nowhere had a lot to do with that too: nature has a way of keeping things in perspective. In the end, the less I interfered with the songs, the truer they felt.

I’m not calling this my ‘most personal record yet’ because that sounds cliché and all my records are personal. Suffice it to say: This is the record where you can hear me the most.”

Written between Sam’s native Switzerland and his longtime home in Brooklyn, Moonsongs “captures a dual sense of belonging and displacement.”

Sam Himself has earned two Swiss Music Awards nominations, landed music on international soundtracks, and built an audience on both sides of the Atlantic. His 2020 EP Slow Drugs earned the National Broadcasting Network’s Best Talent Award and featured collaborations with Denitia, TEEN, and drummer Parker Kindred (Jeff Buckley; Elliott Smith).
