Oceans Of Slumber’s “Where Gods Fear To Speak” Questions Religious Suffering

Oceans of Slumber have released the first single from their upcoming fifth album, “Where Gods Fear to Speak” alongside a video via Season of Mist. It marks their first release since joining the label.

For the past 15 years, the Houston band have embraced Southern Gothic by mixing Melodic Death, Doom, and Black Metal with Electronica.

The new spng arrives ahead of their upcoming tour with Lacuna Coil and New Years Day.

Drummer Dobber Beverley describes the new work as:

Dark cinematic metal. We’ve taken the raw and heavier direction of our last two albums and elevated it to the scale of a blockbuster IMAX movie.

The album’s concept blurs the lines between Dune, Blade Runner and The Dark Tower, though its first single relates to real life events.

All five members of Oceans of Slumber are from Texas and found organized religion suffocating. Vocalist Cammie Beverly’s childhood home was divided over her father’s dedication to the Institute of Divine Metaphysical Research and her mother becoming a Jehova’s Witness.

She says:

Regardless of which one you believe, organized religion makes us suffer in order to please this heavenly deity. But the payoff is only an illusion.

The video for “Where Gods Fear to Speak” features an “unholy masked trinity,” where Cammie is strung up by ropes fashioned in the style of Shibari, an ancient Japanese torture method.

The song also features harsh vocals, as Cammie explains:

I’ve always wanted to do death growls. Where Gods Fear to Speak’ presented the perfect opportunity. Mixing harsh vocals in with my cleans speaks to that tug of war between pleasure and pain, though there’s a freedom that comes with pushing my voice past its perceived breaking point.
